Winter at Lake Maumelle is a dynamic time for the Grande Maumelle Sailing Club. While some sailors wind down their season, others embrace the cooler weather and participate in our year-round racing program. Whether prepping for the next race or gearing up for an off-season outing, club members rely on convenient access to the docks. That’s why completing the first phase of the new floating walkway at D-Dock and SOCO (South Cove) Harbor is such an exciting development.
A Labor of Love by GMSC Volunteers
GMSC volunteers worked over several days to design and build this new floating walkway. Constructed in three sections, the first phase is now open to foot traffic. The broad and stable low-water segment offers a safer alternative to steep ramps and reduces travel time to the south end of D-Dock and SOCO Harbor. Members hauling gear and supplies will appreciate the extra width, accommodating carts and dollies for added convenience.
In addition to constructing the walkway, volunteers spread straw over the temporary path leading to the new structure to keep things clean during construction. This thoughtful effort underscores the dedication of our team to enhancing the club experience. “Volunteers worked hard to make our docks and walkways more convenient and user-friendly,” said David Nigus, who led the project.
The remaining segments will be installed as spring rains raise Lake Maumelle’s water level. For now, a short path from the south end of the D-Dock parking area connects to the new structure, improving access and making the journey to the docks easier for everyone.
Special Thanks!
This project showcases the dedication of our GMSC community. Greg Hamilton and Jeff Olm took a road trip to Gentry, Arkansas, to procure flotation sections essential for construction. Their efforts, along with those of the entire dock team, reflect the commitment of our members to continuously improve club facilities.
