
On Friday, May 9, and Saturday, May 10, the Grande Maumelle Sailing Club (GMSC) opens its docks to adults eager to discover the thrill of sailing. This comprehensive two‑day program blends social learning with hands‑on time aboard 19‑ft Flying Scots and smaller keelboats, ensuring participants leave with both confidence and practical skills. Registration is now open to members; public registration begins April 19, 2025.
Friday Evening: Social Hour & Chalk Talk
The weekend begins in the GMSC clubhouse at 6:30 PM on May 9. Over light refreshments, instructor and event coordinator Tracy Sykes will welcome attendees, assess each sailor’s experience level, and outline individual goals. “We want everyone to feel part of our community before they hit the water,” says Sykes. A brief chalk talk will cover basic sailing terminology, safety protocols, and an overview of the club’s offerings.
Saturday: On‑Water Instruction

Rigging: Properly setting up lines, halyards, and sails

Lunch is onshore—please pack your own—and attendees can store coolers in their vehicles. In the afternoon, sailors switch boats and instructors to practice tacking, jibing, and boat‑to‑boat communication. Expect to wrap up around 4:30 PM. “By the afternoon, you’ll feel comfortable at the helm,” notes Sykes.
Preparation & What to Bring

Prerequisite: Complete the GMSC online overview course (link on our website); an additional recommended course is available through US Sailing.

Gear: Water or sports drink, sunscreen, brimmed hat, PFD/life jacket (let us know if you need one), non‑marking deck shoes, sunglasses with retainers, and quick‑dry clothing.

Directions: From Hwy 10, follow signs to GMSC and Westrock Landing Marina. Turn right through the stone gate and park near the pavilion—please don’t block boats.
Weather & Safety
We sail in light rain but will move indoors if there’s any lightning. All safety briefings and life‑jacket fittings occur before stepping on board.
