NOTICE OF RACE:
Grande Maumelle Sailing Club
Le Mans sur Maumelle
October 12, 2025
Rules
Racing is governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing (2025-2028)
Eligibility
The race is open to active and previous A and B fleet keelboats. If you need help determining your rating, please contact the coordinator.
Entry
Due to the nature of the race, all entrants must register by October 6th to ensure that all starting times are allocated. If you wish to participate & register after the 6th, please be aware that you may be given a last-place spot for the start, regardless of your handicap, due to the constraints of race preparation. If you have more than one rating or more than one boat, you must clarify which boat & which rating at registration. You may register online or by contacting Yates Phillips or James Corriveau.
Fees
This event is free for GMSC members.
Schedule
Sunday, October. 12th
10:00 a.m. Meeting at Pavilion to review rules & start times. (MANDATORY for at least one crew member per boat)
11:00 Race starts.
12:04 Last boat projected to leave
TBD: After the first three non-protested boats finish, the race will be called. Monitor channel 72.
Courses
The course will be one lap around the lake. Boats will stage at the launch docks in the launch ramp and crane area, and finish between the T dock and the pin. Once a boat starts, they must sail over the start/finish line at the T dock. A lap consists of starting from the launch area, crossing the start/finish line at the T dock, heading east to the island near the dam (close to the restricted zone sign), rounding that island to port, then sailing west to the mark by the bridge, rounding that mark to port, and finally heading east to the finish line. Due to depth and underwater obstructions, it is highly recommended to give wide berth to Jim’s Island and avoid sailing between it and the southern shore. The total distance is approximately 17.5 miles. Changes to course and start times due to water level will be announced at the mandatory Competitors Meeting.
To prepare for your start: Each boat must begin at its scheduled time. Boats with slower ratings (higher numerical ratings) leave first. Do not block or interfere with boats scheduled to go before you when docking or departing. Boats that leave first are given priority and preference for dock space. Slower boats will be positioned at the ends of the docks, furthest from shore. Boats may be scheduled into groups, with one group entering once the previous group has cleared. If space allows, you may dock early behind the boat scheduled to leave before you and walk your boat toward the end of the dock as space becomes available. If you and another boat share the exact same start time, space is first-come, first-served. You are encouraged to sail near the launch area while waiting for docking, but avoid being between the launch area and the start/finish line.
Motors
Motors may not be used after your start signal until the race is finished.
Start
Each boat will be anchored with sails not flying (either down or furled), tied to the dock with at least one dock line, with no engines running, and all persons off the boat. No hands may be on dock lines or in contact with the boat. When your start horn sounds, you may board your vessel, raise the sails, and cast off. You must then sail through the start-finish line and then continue around the course. It is the competitors' responsibility to know their start times, which will be provided at the mandatory competitors' meeting.
Any boat leaving early must return to the dock, secure and tie up the boat, stow the sails, disembark, and then restart; failure to do so will result in forfeiture.
Communication
You must carry a cell phone on your boat that remains turned on, or a radio on channel 72.
Protesting
If you want to protest a boat, you must notify the race committee immediately after the incident by radio or phone to declare your intent. If a boat you intend to protest finishes and you have not contacted the race committee after raising a protest flag at the first reasonable opportunity, the protest will be disallowed; the finish will stand.
Finish
Due to the nature of this race, the race committee will have minimal presence. Please monitor your VHF radios on channel 72. As you pass West Rock Marina on your way to the Start/Finish line, please radio the Race Committee on Channel 72 or call them so they are ready to witness your finish. After the first three non-protested boats cross the finish line, the Race Committee will announce that the race is over.
Prizes
Prizes will be awarded to crews placing first, second, and third.
