Commodores Corner – Over and Out

by Mary Michaels

It is hard to believe 2024 is coming to a close and with it my time as Commodore. It has been an honor and privilege to serve as Commodore of this wonderful club

I want to say THANK YOU to the terrific board of directors who have supported me over the past two years.  This has truly been a team effort, and I am proud of all that was accomplished and feel fortunate to have gotten to know you all better!

We have such a special club - one that unites members through a love of sailboat racing and a commitment to support GMSC through volunteerism. This shared purpose, along with the dedication and hard work of our members, drives GMSC forward and ensures its sustainability for future generations.

As we look forward to 2025, I am excited about the new chapter for GMSC and confident that our incoming Commodore, Yates Phillips, will lead with vision, enthusiasm, and dedication.

Thank you all for your support. Let's make 2025 another unforgettable year of sailing, racing and camaraderie.

GMSC Northern Star Lifetime Achievement Award

This year, a special award, the GMSC Northern Star Lifetime Achievement Award, was presented to Drew Daughtery at the Fall Ball for his significant contributions to our club over a long period of time. This award differs from the Linda Sexton Memorial Service Award, which acknowledges achievements in a specific year. Drew's dedication and long-term commitment to the club have been truly outstanding and his impact immeasurable.

The Northern Star award is not given annually (not since 2013), rather members can submit a nomination to the Commodore at any time, which is then voted on by the board.

Prior to Drew, this award has only been given to 5 members: Max Mehlburger, Jon Claas, Chet Hight, Chuck Blair and Fred Kittler

Drew was nominated based on the following significant contributions to our club:

  •  Drew embodies our club mission – RACING. He encourages, helps, teaches others, and helps them obtain boats to promote racing
  •  He has served as commodore, held various board positions consistently, attended all types of Club meetings, participated in work parties, and conducted teaching session.
  •  He has been the recipient of the Shirley Rush Sportsmanship Award and the Linda Sexton Service AwardHis racing achievements are impressive and include winning the Y-flyer Nationals (4X), GMSC Centerboard championship (16x), GMSC keelboat championship (4X), and numerous Y-flyer fleet championships
  •  While his dedicated service to the Club and personal accomplishments are exceptional, his greatest contribution has been the impact of his decade-long leadership in US Sailing, the national governing body of sailing, and leadership in the Y-flyer national fleet, furthering the bylaws-enshrined purpose of GMSC: The promotion of sailboat competition.
  •  With the support of club members, he has inspired enthusiastic participation in US Sailing and class association regattas, including hosting three CoC regattas here, all raising national awareness of the excellence of our small inland lake sailing club.
His lifetime achievements have profoundly advanced competitive sailing and GMSC, serving as a guiding star that inspires all of us. Congratulations Drew!

Successful and Fun (yes, fun!) Silt Fence Work Party

We had a very successful work party on December 14 to install a silt fence around the construction site for Kiko's Corner, which is necessary for preventing soil erosion and protecting the environment. Despite the rainy day, this dedicated group of over 20 folks showed up, put on their boots and rain gear, grabbed shovels, and worked tirelessly to dig trenches and secure the silt fence around the site. The teamwork displayed was inspiring, and it was a fantastic opportunity for members to connect and contribute while getting a little muddy!

THANK YOU to all who came out and made this work party successful!

Member Profile - From Burt Taggert

I am new to sailing. The Adult Learn to Sail course I took a few months ago was my first time sailing and I loved it. I am blessed with a wonderful wife and three teenagers who I’m hoping show some interest learning to sail in the future. For work, I design and build custom houses in and around Little Rock. I have a lifelong love for all things water related and so I came to GMSC as a way to get more experiences on the water.

Keelboat Racing

Keelboat racing is ongoing with racing and fun up at the clubhouse post racing.  Recently we had chili and snacks after a cold and wet day on the lake followed by a rule discussion led by Drew Daugherty.

Please check the race schedule and come join the fun!

Also, coming soon we will have a crew sign-up sheet available to match skippers and interested crew members.  In the meantime, please reach out to Mary Michaels if you would like help finding a boat to crew on.
